Heba or Tian? Tian. Marc and Steven are both empathetic individuals, and neither are particularly direct, nor ambitious. They are not good fits personality-wise for Heba, and I like the idea of learning magic for them more than a straight-up ability.
Acquired Ability: Magic
Personality Traits:
& Self-Sacrificing: Marc will always put other people first. Some of it is genuinely wanting to protect people, some of it is punishing himself for the death of his little brother, and some of it is his deep lack of self-worth after his abusive childhood. Steven's tendency towards putting others first is rooted in this, but expressed in a more healthy manner, as over politeness and blurting things out that he thinks people need to hear.
& Smart: Though Marc doesn't have a lot of patience for book-learning, his mind works quickly and cleverly. Steven has the book-learning side of them, but both of them are on the whole pretty smart.
& Protective: Sometimes over-protective. The whole plot of the show came from Marc being over-protective of Steven and Layla, and Marc got into his whole situation with Khonshu because he tried to protect people from his former CO. Steven makes the conscious decision that he'd rather save the world than stay safe in their mind.
& Avoidant: Talking about his feelings is the most uncomfortable thing in the world for Marc; it's much, much easier to deflect, to hide, to run away. Steven is a little better about it, but Steven is also heavily amnesiatic about a lot of things on Marc's side of the brain, and doesn't always have the experience or words to talk about things. Their shared coping mechanism, dissociation, is the most extreme form of avoidance there is.
& Cautious: Marc is cautious to the point of paranoia, not just in his actions, but in his relationships, never reaching out because he might get hurt. Steven is cautious instead to the point of passivity, never really going out of his way to try new things, with no real ambition. Being thrust into a new world with new dangers is going to be difficult for both of them.
& Socially Awkward: Neither Marc nor Steven are actually very good with people. Marc is stand-offish and awkward, and Steven is info-dumping and overly familiar, tending to be off-putting. Neither of them have many friends.
History: MCU wiki. CW for child abuse. The character is made up of three distinct alters, people developed to protect the self during childhood trauma. Marc and Steven are aware of each other and work closely together. Jake is aware of Marc and Steven, and they are vaguely aware there must be a third, but they do not know who he is or anything about him. Jake will come up much less in play than the other two, until we find a good plot for him to reveal himself.
Canon Abilities/Skills:
Jake is still technically the avatar of Khonshu, which means he (and the other two, even if they don’t know it) can summon a magical suit of armor that protects them in battle, gives them superior strength, allows them to glide (when wearing a suit version with a cape), and heals them from most wounds. Marc and Steven are unaware they still have this power, and Jake will try very hard to keep it from them. They will choose to stay chipped, so this won't ever come up.
The trio all have physical fighting abilities, to varying levels of skill and ferocity, and Marc and Jake are good at infiltration and blending in. Steven is decidedly not, but he's also better at researching than the other two. They speak multiple languages between them.
Suitability: As one of Marc’s most persistent issues is opening up about his feelings, I'm looking forward to tethering him to at least one person, preferably more. Steven is going to just eat up the ability to learn magic like the happy little nerd he is. I do best in a plot-driven game, and I expect the mission set-up will be good for keeping me engaged. Marc is skilled at infiltration, and capable of fighting if he has to. He and Steven will both be gung-ho for wanting to help an oppressed people.
Inventory: Just his clothes, wallet, cell phone, and his wedding ring in a pocket. He also has the scarab device that would, on Earth, point to Ammit's now-broken ushabti, which Steven has been treating like a fancy worry-stone.
CHARACTER QUESTIONNAIRE
What are your character's feelings on freedom? How would they define freedom? How important is it to them? Would they fight for it, or have they fought for it in the past? If they have, how did they go about it?
Freedom important, is worth fighting for-- and is for other people, on the whole. Marc has never really been free his whole life, since he was a young boy, and he's honestly not sure what to do with himself now that he doesn't have a mission or a goal, after Khonshu freed him and Steven. He absolutely believes in freedom as important, but he personally kind of fears it a little.
Steven is kind of re-learning what freedom feels like. He spent most of his waking time thinking he was free, only to find that he was just a part of someone else's life. He's still coming to terms with what that means for both their freedoms.
Describe a formative moment in your character's life, something that changed them and defined who they are as a person.
The moment that put Marc and Steven on their current trajectory is when Marc turned his back on the Field of Reeds, the peaceful Egyptian afterlife, to rescue Steven from the Duat, the realm of unbalanced souls where sand had claimed him. In the process gave Steven the validation he needed to feel like a real person again. Because of Marc's sacrifice and honesty, the two of them could fight as one, switching seamlessly rather than fighting each other.
Does your character have a favorite person? If so, how would they describe that person? What do they like about that person? What do they dislike? If they don't have a favorite person, what would they look for in a favorite person? What traits would draw them to another person? What traits could they tolerate that others might not be able to?
Steven's favorite person is Layla, easy peasy. She's strong and smart and amazing and beautiful. Maybe she leaps ahead a little before making a proper plan, and jumps to conclusions a bit too readily when it comes to Marc maybe doing something to hurt her, but that last is really more Marc's fault than Layla's, right?
Marc is torn between Layla and Steven as his favorite person. Can he say both? He also admires Layla, though with less of a puppy-love cast and more of an experienced cast, having seen her work for years, but he feels Steven embodies a lot of his most cherished virtues. Even if Steven can be very annoying sometimes, he still loves him for it.
What has your character's arc been like so far? How have they developed from their first appearance to their canon point?
Marc and Steven's arc in the show is one of self-acceptance and self-love. They're not there yet, but they're a couple important steps closer, being honest with each other and working together instead of fighting each other. They moved from a place of fear to a place of support.
How would you like to continue your character's arc in the game? How would you like them to develop? What would you like to have them accomplish?
I feel like Marc in particular has more growth to make when it comes to honesty and clarity, and while he has made strides towards accepting and moving beyond the guilt of his brother's death and his mother's abuse, he still has work to do. Steven has to come to terms with being part of a system rather than fully his own person. Both of them still need to uncover and accept Jake, who they both are aware of but seem to keep constantly avoiding discussing, let alone accepting. And they need to heal their relationship with Layla, and work out how to balance the both of them (the three of them) and their different connections to her.
